On the morning of Oct. 17th, the opening ceremony of Seminar on Pakistan Meteorological and Earthquake Forecast, Mitigation and Relief was held at Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology (NUIST). The seminar was organized by the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China, hosted by the WMO Nanjing RTC. Professor Niu Shengjie, the vice-president of NUIST attended and delivered a speech on the opening ceremony. Besides, Deputy Director Lei Zhaochong and 20 meteorologists, scientists, scholars and officials who come from the Pakistan WAPDA,  Atomic Energy Commission, Pakistan Meteorological Department, Islamabad Cabinet Departments as well as the university attended the seminar, too. The Deputy Director of the WMO RTC, Professor Wang Suchun presided over the opening ceremony.
The vice-president Niu Shengjie on behalf of the NUIST showed a warm welcome to the participants. He introduced the developing situation of our university and Nanjing WMO RTC, the internationalized school situation and achievements in recent years. He specially emphasized that the discipline of Atmospheric Science of NUIST ranked NO.1 among Chinese universities in 2012 China Discipline Ranking, which was authoritatively assessed by the Ministry of Education of China.  He also hoped that this seminar could provide a platform for the participants’ management and professional knowledge, so as to promote the Pakistan meteorological, earthquake prediction, management of disaster prevention and mitigation work.
The Deputy Director of Pakistan Meteorological Department, Mr. Amir Najeeb Ahmed on behalf of the Pakistan government, and all participants appreciated Ministry of Commerce of China, NUIST and WMO RTC for organizing the seminar. He hoped that all the participants could learn some knowledge.
It is understood that since the China and Pakistan established the diplomatic relations on May 21, 1951, the two countries have been friendly to each other, and kept close cultural exchanges. Based on this, our university signed a joint training meteorological master's project with the Pakistan Meteorological Department and China Meteorological Administration. The first 10 masters have graduated and there are still three Pakistan doctorate student in meteorology.
This is the first bilateral training course which is organized by NUIST RTC Nanjing for Pakistan。The purpose is to promote education and training of bilateral cooperation between China and Pakistan, especially promoting China-Pakistan exchanges and cooperation in the fields of meteorology, earthquake prediction and  disaster prevention and mitigation.
