Seminar on Meteorological and Earthquake Forecast Mitigation and Relief for Developing Countries was held at NUIST

In the morning of 14 October, Seminar on Meteorological and Earthquake Forecast, Mitigation and Relief for Developing Countries held by the WMO Regional Training Centre, which lasts for 21 days, was held in our university. The executive deputy director of WMO Regional Training Centre  Nanjing Wang Suchun and the representative of the Department of Commerce of Jiangsu Province Zheng Lin attended the ceremony and delivered speeches. The ceremony was held by the deputy director of WMO Regional Training Centre Lei Zhaochong.

Professor Wang Suchun, the executive deputy director of WMO Regional Training Centre, gave a warm welcome to all the participants and and gave a brief introduction on NUIST and the Regional Training Centre. She emphasized   that from 2003 to 2013, more than 25 major earthquakes have struck on countries in Asia, Africa, Oceania as well as central and South America claiming tens of thousands of lives and leaving millions homeless by leveling their shelters to ground. Not to mention billions of economic loss to a national economy. To explore efficient and effective options to provide early warning on meteorological and seismic disasters, in particular, to mitigate their impacts, to activate subsequent professional and effective rescue and relief efforts are crucial for land development, meteorological, emergency response and other related authorities in each country,  Ministry of Commerce authorized the WMO Regional Training Centre Nanjing to organize this seminar, hoping it can be a chance to share the experience of China with students from all countries and learn valuable experience from participants in the mean time.

Zheng Lin, the representative of the Department of Commerce of Jiangsu Province delivered a speech. She hopes that the effect of foreign aid training program can be strengthened through participants, advancing cooperation and communication on meteorology, earthquake and prevention and reduction of disasters between two countries.
Ms. Hellen Caroline gave a speech as participants representative. She talked about the importance of strengthening the cooperation on reducing the risk of disasters, and praised that Chinese government had been working on enhancing international cooperation, providing humanitarian aid for many affected countries. She on behalf of all participants expressed thanks to Chinese government, NUIST and the WMO Regional Training Centre Nanjing.
 
Participants from Kenya, Mongolia, Ethiopia, Cuba, Panama, Burma and so on will attended this seminar.
