The Training Center of Typhoon Committee of WMO was Established in NUIST
 
On the morning of November 26, the opening ceremony of the 7th Integrated Workshop of the UNESCAP/WMO Typhoon Committee was held at the Lecture hall of the Meteorology Building of NUIST. With “Effective Warning” as its theme and “Common Alerting Protocol” as its sub-theme. This workshop will last for four days.  100 experts in Meteorology, Hydrology and Disaster Reduction and Mitigation from 13 committee countries and regions of Typhoon Committee attended this workshop.
 
Presided by Prof. Li Beiqun, Vice President of NUIST, the opening ceremony was attended by Ms. Kelly Anne Hayden, Economic Affairs Officer of ESCAP, Mr. Koji Kuroiwa, Chief of Tropical Cyclone Program of WMO, Mr. Olavo Rasquinho, Typhoon Committee Secretary, Mr. Kang Jooyoub, Director of River Management Division of Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs of Republic of Korea, Ms. Li Mingmei, Deputy Director-General of Department of International Cooperation of China Meteorological Administration, Mr. Liu Zhiyu, Chief Engineer of Hydrological Bureau of the Ministry of Water Resources of the People’s Republic of China, Prof. Guan Zhaoyong, Vice President of NUIST.
 
The Typhoon Committee (TC) was an inter-government body jointly established by UNESCAP and WMO in 1968, whose secretariat was now located in Macao, China. The main objective of Typhoon Committee is to promote and coordinate the planning and implementation of measures required for minimizing the loss of life and material damage caused by tropical cyclone (typhoons) in Asia and the Pacific.
 
During the 44th TC Session, WMO Regional Training Center Nanjing was designated as a training center of the TC. At the opening ceremony, Mr. Olavo Rasquinho, Typhoon Committee Secretary and Prof. Guan Zhaoyong jointly inaugurated the Typhoon Committee Training Center. Prof. Guan Zahoyong stated that the training center would strive to provide a platform for information exchange and resource sharing for countries and regions in typhoon monitoring and early warning, disaster reduction and mitigation and climate change.
 
In the following four days, the experts will focus on Effective Warnings and Common Alert Protocol and share the successful experience in respond to the impacts of climate change and typhoon-related disasters reduction and mitigation. Besides, lectures on key factors of effective warnings, the use of common alert protocol in warning services will be made during the workshop.
